Washington state secured a significant legal victory this week as a federal court struck down the Trump administration’s attempt to impose a $100,000 tax on new H-1B visa petitions. In a final ruling issued Monday, the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts found the policy unlawful, siding with a multistate coalition that included Washington.

For hospitals and health systems, the ruling provides immediate financial relief and helps preserve access to critical workforce pipelines. The now-vacated $100,000 fee had made it prohibitively expensive to recruit highly skilled international clinicians, including physicians, nurses and specialized researchers, at a time when workforce shortages remain a major challenge.

Without that barrier, hospitals can once again use the H-1B program to fill hard-to-staff roles that are essential to maintaining patient access and care quality, particularly in specialized or underserved areas.
