Rural hospitals are doing remarkable work to improve care in their communities, often with limited resources.This year, WSHA’s Rural Quality Everyday Extraordinary Awards recognize two organizations that are achieving impressive results through innovation, teamwork and a commitment to better patient outcomes: WhidbeyHealth and PeaceHealth United General Medical Center.
WhidbeyHealth received the award for excellence in their implementation of TeamBirth, an evidence-based maternity care model developed by Ariadne Labs and supported by WSHA’s Safe Delivery Roadmap Program. The model brings patients and care teams together through communication boards, regular huddles and ongoing conversations about goals and preferences during labor and delivery.
As a result, patients reported better experiences with communication, care planning, pain management, respect and overall satisfaction with their birth experience.
PeaceHealth United General Medical Center earned recognition for its comprehensive effort to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). By combining high reliability organization principles with frontline quality improvement work, the team reduced catheter days, eliminated CAUTI cases and strengthened adherence to prevention practices. The initiative also boosted staff engagement and ownership of patient safety efforts.
