Senate looks to AHCA vote next week

June 21, 2017

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this week said he hopes the Senate can vote late next week on its version of a bill to repeal and replace parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). McConnell released a “working draft” on Thursday morning, and WSHA will be analyzing its impact to Washington State. The Congressional Budget Office is hoping to report by early next week on how the bill would affect insurance coverage levels and the federal budget.

Three issues remain in play: whether and how to phase out Medicaid expansion and cap federal Medicaid spending; the shape of tax credits to help low-income people purchase insurance; and the relaxation of community rating and other insurance requirements in the ACA that were included in the House bill. WSHA strongly opposed the House-passed American Health Care Act (AHCA) and remains very concerned about the proposal’s impact on access to health care in Washington State.
