New FDA Tool Helps Streamline Antimicrobial Stewardship

The CDC notes that possibly as many as 50% of antibiotics prescriptions are prescribed unnecessarily, leading to multi drug resistant organisms, unnecessary hospitalizations and even death. The Food and Drug Administration has developed a new website that provides access to the most up to date information on antibacterial and antifungal medications in an effort to thwart inappropriate prescribing practices. The goal in to ensure the most timely and accurate “breakpoints” which is criteria used to understand how well an antibiotic will work for a particular infection. Read more at the FDA website.
