For parents with children in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), leaving the hospital can be incredibly difficult. Thanks to a new family room just steps away from the NICU at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, some families will not need to endure this difficult experience each day.
The new room is 1,800 square feet located on the same floor as the NICU. It offers families a kitchen, living room, laundry room, dining room and four sleepover rooms. The space offers some relief for parents and families going through a difficult time and saves a trip to the nearest Ronald McDonald House three blocks away. It also offers a chance for families to connect with others going through a similar experience.
“You go from the highest high, the birth of your child, to some things in a difficult situation,” Deaconess Chief Operating Officer Wade Hunt said in a news story with KXLY. “You want to be intimately involved in their care.”
The space can serve up to 50 family members a day, providing lodging for nine family members a night. Read more about the new family room in an article from KXLY. (Tim Pfarr)
