In a new survey of 17,000 physicians, Merritt Hawkins shows physicians are continuing to experience burnout at high rates, and many are considering leaving practice or are planning to retire early. The survey gives health care administrators valuable insights into how physicians feel about the practice of medicine and provides an opening to start a conversation with their own organization’s physicians. This can be an invaluable tool in the effort to recruit, retain and understand physicians. Some key findings include:
- 80 percent of physicians are overextended or are at capacity, with no time to see additional patients
- 48 percent of physicians said their time with patients is always or often limited
- 46.8 percent of physicians plan to accelerate their retirement plans
