Sepsis – COVID Goals of Care

Objectives:
- Describe primary palliative care communication skills that can be used at the bedside when caring for patients with sepsis.
- Explain how a patient’s prior functional trajectory and personal values impact a patient’s prognosis.
- Strategize ways to respond to patients and families when there is a perceived prognostic discordance with the medical team.
Caroline Hurd, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gerontology and Geriatrics. She is also the Oregon Regional Palliative Care Educator for Providence Health and Services. She earned her medical degree from University of California, San Francisco and completed Internal Medicine residency and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at University of Washington. Caroline is the Portland Site Director for the interprofessional Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care at the University of Washington and an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center where she works on the inpatient Palliative Care team. Caroline is Senior Faculty for VitalTalk and travels nationally to teach their train-the trainer courses.
