The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has alerted the community that scam artists are calling their clinics and offices posing as the Medical Board, saying there is a problem with a physician’s DEA registration. They are providing the Washington Medical Commission’s phone number as their own.
DOH believes this appears to be part of a larger extortion scheme related to scammers posing as government officials. Please be aware that boards and commissions will never call asking for a DEA number, private information or payment. Providers who want to see if there is a legitimate issue with their credentials should contact DOH at hsqa.csc@doh.wa.gov.
The Medical Board of California recently reported a similar scheme where scammers posing as DEA agenda demanded payment in order to keep a licensee from being suspended. (Trish Anderson)
