Washington State’s new overtime pay regulations take effect July 1, 2020. The new rules establish an overtime pay threshold of 2.5 times the state’s minimum wage with a phased-in implementation until 2028. For an employee to be exempt from overtime pay obligations, they will need to earn more than the threshold specified by the Department of Labor & Industries and satisfy the relevant duties test. To help employers comply with the new rules, L&I created a new virtual guidance tool available here. WSHA’s bulletin on the new overtime pay rules can be accessed here.
