Beginning this month, the Health Care Authority (HCA) has eliminated the requirement for home health providers to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) to receive payment for claims submitted through the Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) system. HCA will undertake a redesign to streamline the claims process, making it easier for home health agencies to submit data and receive reimbursement for services to Medicaid clients.
The federal 21st Century Cures Act directed states to implement a system for EVV for certain Medicaid services. The EVV systems were mandated to verify visits conducted by home health workers for recipients of Medicaid-funded in-home personal care services (PCS) and home health care services.
As part of state implementation, home health workers were required to meet certification requirements, including obtaining an NPI, which was not previously mandated. A simplified EVV system will ensure that home health care services are accurately billed and providers are compensated accordingly without obtaining an NPI.
Any comments or questions regarding the EVV process can be submitted to HCA through theĀ EVV HHCS email box. (Zosia Stanley).
