Explore leading a culture of safety at the Safety & Quality Leadership Summit

February 6, 2020

It is my pleasure to invite you to the 2020 Executive & Trustee Safety & Quality Leadership Summit, formerly the CEO & Trustee Safety & Quality Summit. The event’s new name is intended to reflect the expanded audience – chief nursing officers, chief quality officers, chief medical officers and other C-Suite leaders are encouraged to attend along with CEOs and board members.

This year’s theme is “leading a culture of safety; everyone, every time.” As health care leaders, ensuring the safety and quality of patients, families and the workforce is a paramount duty. We will explore the impact of the culture you set on all those you serve and hear from international thought leaders as well as your colleagues about ways to nurture a culture of safety.

Feature speakers as part of the event are:

  • Mike Abrashoff was the most-junior officer in the Pacific Fleet when he took command of the near-worst performing ship. Twelve months later, the USS Benfold was the best ship in the Navy, using the same crew. That transformation has lessons for every organization: leadership matters, culture is everything.
  • Dr. Margaret Heffernan argues that building the strongest organization can be accelerated by implementing seemingly small changes, such as embracing conflict as a creative catalyst; using every mind on the team; celebrating mistakes; speaking up and listening more; and encouraging time off from work. Watch her TED talk for a preview.
  • David Marx is a true pioneer in the internationally recognized safety practice of Just Culture. He draws on experience that spans more than two decades of examining laws, regulations, and industry practices to help lawmakers, regulatory authorities, and organizational leaders fulfill their responsibilities to produce safer outcomes. His book, Whack A Mole, is a classic in the Just Culture field.

The Summit is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at the Seattle Airport Marriott. Registration is available online.

It’s sure to be an outstanding day for executive teams and their board members to learn together and to take back actionable ideas for accelerating safety culture. I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with you at the event!
