AHA and other hospital organizations file amicus brief in support of WA-led effort to block public charge rule

September 19, 2019

The American Hospital Association (AHA), with America’s Essential Hospitals, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Catholic Health Association of the United States, the Children’s Hospital Association and the Federation of American Hospitals, has filed an amicus brief in support of WA Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s petition to block the Trump Administration implementation of its public charge rule. The amicus brief states that “the new public charge definition will deter millions of immigrants and their families, including U.S. citizen children, from accepting and using health care and other services to which they are legally entitled, yet the DHS unjustifiably refused to consider those millions in promulgating the public charge rule [and that] the public charge rule will harm patients and the hospitals they rely on for care.” WSHA supports the AHA’s work on this important issue.
