2024 WSHA CEO Retreat session spotlight: Statewide cybersecurity incident response

August 28, 2024

Individual hospitals and healthcare systems carry out their own cybersecurity drills, but it’s not unlikely that a simultaneous attack could impact multiple facilities in our state.

According to the National Security Administration, the U.S. has seen a 130% increase in Russian cybercriminal attacks on U.S. hospitals and health care systems in just the last few months. And as the Microsoft outages that began July 19 showed, disruptions can also significantly impact IT systems and patient care.

On Thursday, Oc. 3 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. at the 2024 WSHA CEO Retreat, we will spend time planning for how to coordinate a statewide response, focusing on CEO-to-CEO communication, ensuring patient safety and how to best facilitate patient movement.

This exercise is not focused on technical pieces of cybersecurity, but rather CEO decision-making, collaboration and communication. A key consideration is what role members want WSHA to play in a cyberattack affecting multiple hospitals. (Ashley Trotti)
