Hospital Size and Location

Washington hospitals are relatively small. Most hospitals in Washington State have fewer than 100 beds.

Washington State is consistently among the highest in the nation on measures of efficiency in inpatient care. National data is from the AHA Hospital Statistics 2011, published by the American Hospital Association.  The is based on the AHA's 2009 survey of hospitals.

As the population has grown, available beds have decreased. Available beds are the number of beds that are staffed and ready to receive patients.  Hospitals may be licensed to offer a larger number of staffed beds.
