Swedish Acquires Issaquah Highlands Site for New East King County Hospital


Swedish Health Services, Seattle, recently completed an option agreement to purchase 17.88 acres in the Issaquah Highlands development in east King County. Swedish plans to build a 175-bed hospital and health complex on the property, located just off Interstate 90 (I-90). The Issaquah-Sammamish region is one of the fastest growing areas of the state.

Swedish plans to start construction in 2010 and open the first phase of the facility with a minimum of 80 beds in 2012, growing to 175 beds by 2019. (robbm@wsha.org)

Call for Nominations for Warren Featherstone Reid Award for Excellence in Healthcare

In 1994, the Legislature honored Warren Featherstone Reid and his policy interests by creating the Warren Featherstone Reid Award "to recognize cost-effective and quality health care services." The award is to be given annually to "health care providers and facilities in Washington State who exhibit exceptional quality and value in the delivery of health services." Feather was a beloved figure who influenced health policy nationally and locally for more than 30 years.

Northwest and Cancer Care Alliance Sign Letter of Intent

Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Seattle, and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), Seattle, recently signed a letter of intent to explore the development of a new, state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility offering proton beam radiation. The center will be located at Northwest's north Seattle campus and be fully funded and operated by the SCCA.

The new facility would be the only one of its kind in the entire region, and one of only seven in the U.S. Proton beam therapy delivers precisely targeted doses of radiation to tumors, destroying cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. (robbm@wsha.org)

Seven State Hospital-Owned Home Health Programs Recognized

Home health programs connected to seven hospitals in Washington State were listed in the OCS 2007 HomeCareElites ranking. They were compared to hundreds of similar organizations in the United States on quality of care, quality improvement, and financial performance. The seven and their parent hospitals were:

  • Central Washington Health Service, Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee
  • Evergreen Home Health Service, Evergreen Healthcare, Kirkland
  • Good Samaritan Home Health and Hospice, Good Samaritan Community Healthcare, Puyallup
  • Home Care and Hospice Southwest, Southwest Washington Medical Center, Vancouver
  • Memorial Home Care Services, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Yakima
  • Olympic Medical Home Health, Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles
  • Swedish Home Health and Hospice, Swedish Health Services, Seattle

Three Washington Hospitals Achieve Clinical Excellence List

The 2008 Health Grades' Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence List included three hospitals from Washington State. They were:

  • Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee;
  • Providence – Everett, Colby Campus, Everett; and
  • St. Mary Medical Center, Walla Walla.

Health Grades uses in-hospital mortality or complication ratings from MedPAR (Medicare Provider Analysis and Review) data in the comparisons. (robbm@wsha.org)

Promotions!

David Brooks has just moved up from his role as Chief Operating Officer to take on the Chief Executive Officer role at Providence Everett Medical Center. Former CEO Gail Larson stays on as Chief Executive Officer Emeritus until June. Thanks, Gail, for many years of fine leadership and congratulations, Dave!

In early January, Syd Bersante officially left her role as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way to become the new Chief Operating Officer at St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma. Syd is a Washington native and has an extensive 17-year background with Franciscan Health System, including being the first COO at St. Clare Hospital in Tacoma. Congratulations, Syd!

Welcome Back to Leadership!

Monte Bostwick has returned to Washington as the new CEO at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center, owned by Health Management Associates (HMA). He had served as CEO of Toppenish Community Hospital from 2003-2005, and left to take another HMA position in Mississippi. Mr. Bostwick held several other positions for HMA in Florida and Arkansas and is a native of New Mexico. Welcome back, Monte!

Michael MotteMichael Motte (in photo) has returned to Capital Medical Center in Olympia as the new CEO. He comes from having served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Mary Black Health System in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He had served as the Chief Financial Officer at Capital from 2001-2005. Mr. Motte is a native of California with several years of experience in health care administration. Welcome back, Michael!

Welcome to New Leadership Faces!

David Bernier is the new CEO at Lake Chelan Community Hospital. It is a coming home of sorts, as Mr. Bernier is a native of Winthrop, WA. He is a 22-year member of the U.S. Air Force and has over 25 years experience in health care management. He is coming to Chelan from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was most recently a hospital consultant and realtor. Congratulations and welcome back to Washington, David!

Gregory Davis became CEO of Kindred Hospital in Seattle in November. Mr. Davis relocated from California where he had served as CEO of Continental Rehabilitation Hospital of San Diego. Prior to that he held various positions around the country with Regency Health and Sunbridge Health Care Corporation. Welcome, Greg!

Deborah Guthrie became the CEO/Administrator of Toppenish Community Hospital in November. Most recently she was the CEO for Northwest Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale, Mississippi, another HMA hospital. Prior to that Ms. Guthrie worked with HCA in Atlanta for 14 years. She is a native of Ohio. Welcome, Debby!

Steve Patonai became the new Chief Executive Officer of Auburn Regional Medical Center on January 18. He has 21 years of experience in hospital administration. He has held two prior positions as a CEO. Most recently he served as CEO at the SkyRidge Medical Center, Cleveland, Tennessee. Welcome, Steve!

Kudos to Dr. David Weber, Wenatchee Valley Medical Center

David Weber, M.D. has been named "Medical Professional of the Year" by readers of the Wenatchee Business Journal. Dr. Weber is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Wenatchee Valley Medical Center. He has been with the Medical Center since October, 1975.
