General Facts

  • Washington has 95 community hospitals, with 14 additional hospitals
  • There are 38 critical access hospitals (small, usually rural, hospitals)
  • There are 77 designated trauma centers in the state
  • 42 hospitals are private not for profit
  • Nine are for profit
  • 42 are public district hospitals
  • One is a state and one is a county hospital

    Hospital Beds

  • In fiscal year 2006, Washington had a total of 14,168 licensed inpatient hospital beds
  • 42 hospitals have fewer than 50 beds
  • 17 hospitals in Washington have between 50 and 100 beds
  • Just three hospitals have more than 400 beds
  • Washington State has the lowest number of hospital beds per population in the nation

    Hospital Use

  • Washington hospitals had a total of 551,280 admissions in 2007
  • Patients visited an emergency department 2,454,777 times in 2007
  • There were more than 10.8 million outpatient visits to Washington hospitals in 2006
  • 401,069 surgeries were performed in Washington hospitals in 2007
  • Washington has the sixth lowest admissions rate per population in the nation

    Community Benefits

  • In fiscal year 2006, 33 Washington urban non-profit hospitals provided $629 million in community benefits
  • Of this, 82 percent, or $518 million, was used to provide charity care
  • These same hospitals received $269 million in tax exemptions  
  •  

    Expenses and Revenue

  • In 2007, Washington Hospitals had more than $12 billion in total expenses 
  • 32 percent of revenue came from Medicare
  • 21 percent of revenue came from Medicaid 
  • 44 percent of revenue came from payments made by private commercial insurance
  • Four percent of all hospital revenues come from the uninsured
  • Hospitals employ about 77,500 Full Time Equivalent employees
