ICU Safe Care Initiative

Washington State hospitals are among a select group which are invited by the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to participate in a two year initiative. This initiative expands skills of ICU physicians and hospital staff in the science of performance so that they can identify and fix defects in our systems and eliminate central line infections. This active learning process is being lead by WSHA staff with content and guidance from Peter Pronovost, M.D., Johns Hopkins University, and Sam Watson of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association's Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality. The initial project between Johns Hopkins and Michigan resulted in:

• nearly 1,800 lives saved
• 129,000 excess hospital days avoided
• $247 million in health care dollars saved
