Closing the Gap: Washington’s Safe Deliveries Initiative

Presenters included:

Carol Wagner, Vice President Patient Safety for the Washington State Hospital Association, led a discussion about how the group can collaborate across the state to make care safer.  

Roger Rowles, MD:  Dr. Rowles practices at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. He discussed Washington state statistics and best practices to promote safe deliveries.

Jeff Thompson, MD:  Dr. Thompson is Medicaid’s medical director. He discussed the Medicaid perspective on cesarean sections.

Elliot Main, MD:  Dr. Main is the Principal Investigator for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC). He discussed Sutter Health's "First Pregnancy and Delivery" quality initiative that focuses on the care of nulliparous women.

Jane Beyer, Senior Counsel for the Democratic Caucus Staff in the Washington State House of Representatives, talked about Washington's commitment to maternal and child health.  

Leasa Lowy, MD:  Dr. Lowy practices at St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham. She discussed the impact of elective inductions.
