August recess: Opportunities for connections

The House and Senate recently adjourned for August recess. Both houses will reconvene on September 5. In anticipation of meetings with members of the congressional delegation, we have developed talking points and provided some background information on the aftermath of Senate not moving forward with the proposals on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). WSHA encourages hospital leaders to meet with their members of Congress during the break. Please let WSHA staff know if we can provide any assistance.... Read More >>

Repeal and replace efforts fail

After three days of debate and voting, the final proposal from Senate Republican leadership known as “skinny repeal” of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) failed by a 49-51 margin. This measure would have repealed the individual insurance mandate and the medical device tax, and delayed the employer mandate for eight years. Along with the failure of two other proposals earlier in the week, the vote brings an end — for now — to Republican efforts to repeal and replace the ACA that have lasted for six months.... Despite Changes, Senate Health Reform Bill Still Very Problematic for Washington

The Washington State Hospital Association remains deeply concerned with the Senate’s approach to repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Most of the underlying provisions of the new bill, including deep cuts to Medicaid, are unchanged from the previous draft and will result in dramatically fewer Washingtonians having access to health coverage and care.... Senate draft bill drastically cuts health coverage

The Washington State Hospital Association is disappointed with the Senate Republican’s attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – called the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017. The bill contains modified versions of many of the provisions from the House’s American Health Care Act (AHCA) and will result in dramatically fewer Washingtonians having access to health care. Our initial reaction is that this bill is worse for our state’s Medicaid program and hospitals and health systems than the House’s version of the bill. ... Read More >>

Senate indicates AHCA action by end of June

U.S. Senate Republican leaders have indicated that they intend to vote on a new version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) by the end of June. A group of GOP senators have been working behind closed doors to rewrite the House version of the bill. In order to be voted on by the end of June, the new product would likely need to be completed sometime next week.... Read More >>

House passes American Health Care Act

We are very disappointed to report that earlier today the House of Representatives narrowly passed the American Health Care Act (217-213). We remain opposed to this piece of legislation that would strip health insurance from so many. We will continue to push WSHA’s principles of preserving health coverage as the bill moves to the Senate.... Read More >>

Vote on AHCA looming

The effort to repeal and replace parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) gained new momentum this week when House conservatives agreed to support an amendment that would significantly weaken the 2010 law’s insurance protections. The action has led to a new push for a House floor vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA) – potentially as early as next week.... Read More >>
