New minimum wage, paid leave law effective Jan. 1, 2018

November 1, 2017

Initiative 1433, enacted by voters, becomes law on January 1. The law increases the minimum wage and requires all employers to offer paid sick leave to employees. The Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) has provided an informational website to learn more and has split rulemaking into two parts. To understand the new law, we encourage you to review Initiative 1433, final rules for employers on certain requirements, and the proposed rules for notification and employee protections from retaliation.

L&I created sample policies and an employee paid sick leave notification that meet the requirements of the bill. The department is now seeking input on the draft policies by the end of the day November 9. Click here if you are interested in submitting feedback about the sample policies. (Chelene Whiteaker)
