Proposed legislation from OIC restricts balance billing

As expected, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) has submitted legislation (HB 1117) to protect patients from receiving balanced bills. The legislation is aimed at protecting patients who use an in-network hospital but then receive an additional "balance" bill from an out-of-network provider for care during the stay. This typically arises when a health plan has failed to reach a network contract agreement with some of the providers practicing at the facility, such as ER, anesthesiology, pathology, and radiology groups.... Flu impacting hospitals

his year's flu has flared up in recent weeks and caused at least 24 deaths so far. The flu and other viruses have sent hundreds of people to emergency departments and urgent care clinics. This has had a significant impact on hospital capacity, resulting in some people waiting hours in emergency departments before they are seen. Latest L&I draft on intermittent rest breaks unworkable

For the last year, the state Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) has been working to revise its administrative policy on rest breaks for all non-exempt employees. WSHA, as well as the business community at large, opposes the latest draft policy that essentially eliminates the ability to interrupt a rest break.
